Central Asian Kyrgyz Felt Carpets Search For A Role In The Modern World

BISHKEK, April 25, 2008 – When one imagines the vast steppes of Central Asia,
yurts and felt carpets come quickly to mind.  It is from sheets of plain white felt
that yurts are built, and it is with colorfully patterned felt that they are decorated
inside. The result is a warm and cheerful shelter that served Central Asia’s
nomads well for thousands of years.

wool and machine spun wool?"-  J. Bettis, Philadelphia, PA
Rug dealers have their own language when it comes to describing individual
oriental rugs and their construction.  Two of the most often misunderstood
terms are “hand-spun wool” and “machine spun wool.”  Today, we will take
some time to explain the difference between the two.

Vegetable Dyes- Madder Root Reds- The RugMan's Blog

In continuation of the vegetable dye discussion, a little insight into one of the
older forms of red dyes, producing muddy reds, oranges, and true reds.
If you pay attention to your vegetable dyed rugs, you will find that most will
contain a considerable amount of red, and most of those will display a muddy,
rusty red that is characteristic of madder root dyeing.  There are about 60
different variations of the madder plant found in Africa, Asia, America, ....

New Shipment Has Arrived!

It's time to celebrate!  Many of you have been waiting for our latest shipment,
and after multiple delays, it has finally arrived.  While it may have taken longer
than expected, good things have been worth the wait.  Over 150 new rugs has
arrived, ranging in size from 2x3 up to 10x14.  The vast majority of the rugs are
8x10's, 9x12's, and 10x14's.  These rugs will be processed and posted on the
website for purchase by August 14th.  You can also view them in person before
they are made public on the website by visiting our showroom.  Hurry in now,
the best selection is going fast, with many of the rugs finding homes before the
paperwork has even been processed.  We look forward to seeing you soon!    -

Lexington Oriental Rugs is Going Green.

With the growing concern over global warming and the immediate energy
problems that the U.S. is facing, Lexington Oriental Rug Company is making
the transition to a more energy efficient, “Green” company.  The transition for a
oriental rug and furniture company is not an easy one.  It takes a lot of energy
and fuel consumption to manufacture, ship, display, and deliver fine oriental
rugs.

  ANDKHOY, Afghanistan; August 1, 2008 -- Twice a week the men whose
wives and daughters weave the traditional red rugs of Central Asia come to this
town in northern Afghanistan to sell their work.
    The carpet bazaar is a rectangular courtyard with a two-floor gallery of
traders’ stalls on every side, and the men approach it with trepidation. Many of
the men have dropped in as onlookers on the previous market day to learn
what they can about the going prices. Now, accompanied by friends for support,
they file into the bazaar and line the sides with their bundled rugs.
