The Karastan Samovar Collection
This magnificent rug is destined to be a classic simply because of its intrinsic beauty and because it is the
perfect partner to the other patterns in the Samovar Collection. Based on rugs found in the Persian city of
Tabriz, this design is a wonderful example of Karastan artistry and craftsmanship.
There is one type of rug for which the city of Tabriz should be given 100% credit... the so called medallion and
corner design. This type of pattern was first used in the 15th century as a design for embossed leather book
covers and was adapted in the 16th century for rug weaving. It is still one of the most common and
recognized types of Persian designs. It has withstood the test of centuries and has been copied by designers
of nearly every rug-weaving country the world over.
The Persians, with their passion for inventing variations on a central theme, have produced many forms of he
boteh, or the famous Persian pine pattern. The boteh shapes, found in the central medallion and the corners
of the field are arranged in a graceful and flowing manner.
