Lexington Oriental Rugs is Going Green!
With the growing concern over global warming and the immediate energy problems that the U.S. is facing, Lexington Oriental Rug Company
is making the transition to a more energy efficient, “Green” company.
The transition for a oriental rug and furniture company is not an easy one. It takes a lot of energy and fuel consumption to manufacture,
ship, display, and deliver fine oriental rugs. Until one takes the time to really think about it, the subject may seem insignificant. But if
companies such a s Lexington Oriental Rugs can decrease energy consumption but even the smallest increment, the effect on the
U.S. environment, and perhaps even the consumer can be drastically changed.
There are a few steps we have taken to immediately effect our energy consumption. It takes a huge number of lights, burning at least
ten hours per day to illuminate and display our furniture and oriental rugs. We now only turn on lights during showroom hours, leaving them
off during the daily opening and closing. We also leave the lights off in the morning hours until the first customers come through our doors.
This can save up to three hours of energy use per day, almost 30% of our light usage!
We have also slightly turned up the temperature, limiting use of our air conditioner. At night, our a/c units are essentially turned off. The
change is not noticeable, and every degree in temperature change can affect 3% of your total energy usage.
Local deliveries have been limited to three days per week, and routes have been combined. This has two effects. It saves customers
money by allowing us to keep our delivery fees the same, regardless of the rising fuel prices. It also limits the number of miles we spend
on the road, increasing our fuel economy.
Our manager, Chad Tussey, has been trying to find manufacturers that use renewable, sustainable resources in their production of
oriental rugs. So far, this has yielded valuable information and has shown that many of our existing manufacturers are taking the same
steps that we are.
Finally, Hugh James and Chad Tussey have created a new informational campaign called Green Energy Guide. Org. The primary
means of this campaign is through their website, and seeks only to provide information about alternative energy.
